Social media works. Within 24 hours following a campaign by Uber, D.C. council members received thousands of calls and signatures, enough to scratch a proposed amendment to the D.C. Taxi Modernization Bill that would have severely impacted the operations of Uber, the on-demand private car service operating in D.C. since late last year.
Posted on Uber's Facebook page Tuesday evening: "More than 50,000 emails, 4,300 signatures, 27,000 tweets, 2,200 mentions, and 100 Facebook shares later ... we're feeling the #UberDCLove! Thanks to everyone for the tremendous support today."
After a contentious day of discussion, the bill was passed and discussions on Uber deferred until December.
